Welcome to our fourth Harper's Market - the Nostalgia Issue! It's been a labor of love, as well as an emotional process...I suppose that's the root of nostalgia. Remembering far-away places, long-ago times and dear ones lost to us has been wrought with feelings, but through this their lives and works live on in glory. It's also brought many wonderful editors, writers, photographers, stylists, hair and makeup artists together again and I suppose that's the LEGACY of nostalgia.
I'm so happy to have the opportunity to publish the last two editorial shoots by the great Francesco Scavullo. This caps a wonderful moment in my professional life, having been the editor who was able to work with him on these final acts of genius. Bringing Bebe Buell together with him 25 years after it had been originally scheduled was a thrill for us all that day in 2003 and the results could not have been any better. Note the contentment on the faces of the great master and models AFTER a full day of shooting in this photo I took. BE SURE to read Randi Graves' piece, "Memories of Scavullo" about that final shoot...and MAKE SURE the tissues are close by.
We have wonderful memories of C.B.G.B.'s (which closed after three decades of being a pivotal source of talent in the music industry), visions of Warhol's Factory with Bibbe Hansen, today's fashions inspired by the immortal Sharon Tate, read about the one-and-only Elaine Kaufman in "Women we Love (AND ALWAYS HAVE!) (my note: and always WILL!). There's right-on "how-to" advice about where to get the makeup, hair and clothing that's keeping everyone on the cutting edge but still allows us to honor our rich and rewarding past.
Let us know what you think, always. We're YOUR editors and always here for you.
May this holiday season mark the beginnings of new and glorious things for you and those you love and hold dear and bring us closer to the history, both personal and professional, that is so important for our good character.
Warmly,
Kevin
